COLUMBIA, TN (May 8, 2024) – The Bucks played No. 6 Dyersburg on May 7th for the chance to advance to the championship game, but Southwest game out on top.
Since the tournament is double elimination and Motlow had not lost until this game, they had another chance to head to the finals by playing No 4. Cleveland State on May 8th.
May 7, 2024 vs Dyersburg State
Motlow initially took the lead in the top of the 3rd inning when John Hale hit a base hit to right field, batting in Tanner Jones for the first run of the game for either team. Dyersburg responded quickly as a home run was hit and a base hit to right field brought a player in, making the score 1-2. Another Dyersburg player hit a home run and that allowed a player on base to run home also. The last run of the inning occurred when a player hit a ground ball to left field. By the 4thinning, the score was 1-5 Dyersburg.
In the bottom of the 4th, Dyersburg continued to extend the lead, batting a sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 1-6.
Motlow added runs to the scoreboard in the bop of the 7th, when Luke Johnson hits the back wall of center field, batting in Hale. Kaleb Gupton also hits a grounder up the middle of the field, bringing home Johnson, making the score 3-6.
Dyersburg continued to score more runs in the bottom of the 7th. A base hit to right field brought a batter in, and a runner was also walked in. Ending the game with Dyersburg winning 3-7.
Hale and Johnson each scored one run and had 1 RBI each. Jones scored one run, and Gupton ran a batter in.
May 8, 2024 vs Cleveland State
Cleveland State started the scoring early as a players scored off two singles, a double, and a home run making the score 0-5 in the bottom of the 1st, making the score 5-0 by the 2nd inning.
In the 2nd inning, CJ Robertson scored off a fly out to right field by Tucker Allen. In the bottom of the second, two Cleveland State players scored off a home run by Trammel. By the 3rd inning, the score was 1-8 with Cleveland State taking the lead.
The Bucks were able to shorten Cleveland State’s lead by Jones scoring off a single by Irvin Hernandez and Johnson batting in Hernandez to make the score 3-8. In the bottom of the 3rd, Cleveland State added one more run to the scoreboard, extending their lead 3-9.
Neither team scored again until the top of the 5th, until Motlow State’s Hernandez scored his second run of the game by ground ball by Robertson, making the score 4-9. Cleveland State responded in the bottom of the 7th by Orr scoring an unearned run.
The Bucks continued to fight back in the top of the 9th when Jay Pichardo and Robertson both scored unearned runs. Despite the teams efforts, Clevelend State took the win 6-10
Hernandez and Robertson both scored two runs, and Pichardo and Jones each scored one run. Ian Lindsay had two RBIs, while Hernandez, Johnson, and Allen each batted one runner in.
Johnson was named to the Second Team All-TCCAA team at shortstop.
Motlow Baseball ended the season with a 29-24 (9-17 conference) record. Hale led the team in runs with 44, Robertson led the team in home runs with 7 and RBIs with 44. Caden Alvey led the pitchers in strikeouts with 79.
