Oct. 10, 2018

After a hard fought 1-0 loss to undefeated Gordon State College Monday afternoon in Shelbyville, the Motlow State Community College women's soccer team can clinch the first TCCAA/Region VII regular season championship when it hosts Southwest Tennessee in McMinnville Friday at 6 p.m.

The Lady Bucks (4-0, 8-3-2) put themselves in position to clinch the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a 3-1 defeat over Dyersburg State on Saturday in Smyrna. The Region VII Tournament will be held Oct. 25 & 26 at St. George's High School in Collierville, with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Central District Tournament.

Motlow got on the board early against Dyersburg, with Tyler Feaster scoring at the 17-minute mark on an assist from Megan Blumhoefer. The score remained 1-0 into the second half, with Motlow increasing its advantage to 2-0 with a goal at 56 minutes by April Gillespie on an assist from Keely Smith.

Emily Vallejo, who leads the Lady Bucks in goals and points this season, completed the scoring for Motlow with a goal at the 79-minute mark on an assist from Olga Lopez. Dyersburg State scored its only goal one minute later.

The Lady Bucks were aggressive on offense from start to finish, recording 33 shots with 11 on goal. Gillespie had six shots, with Vallejo and Smith adding five, with all five of Smith's shots on goal. Emily Bryant shut the Lady Eagles out in the first half as keeper, while Ashley Woods played the final 45 minutes.

Monday against Gordon State, now 13-0 on the season, the Lady Bucks battled even after giving up the game's only goal at the 14-minute mark. It was a defensive struggle, with Motlow getting off six shots and the visitors only five. Bryant was outstanding as goal keeper with three saves and the one goal allowed.

After hosting Southwest Tennessee Friday, the Lady Bucks will host non-conference opponent Andrew College at Tullahoma's soccer field behind East Middle School on Sunday at 2 p.m. Motlow will complete its Region VII schedule with a trip to Columbia State Oct. 22. After the conference tournament, the Lady Bucks will host Martin Methodist College JV Oct. 29 in Tullahoma to close the regular season.
