Janna Lewis leads Lady Bucks to weekend sweep

Feb. 5, 2019

Sophomore Janna Lewis scored 65 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and had five steals, to lead the Motlow Lady Bucks to a pair of TCCAA victories last weekend at Copperweld Arena on Motlow State's Moore County campus.

The Lady Bucks (7-4, 15-9) gained sole possession of second place in the conference with the weekend sweep, beating Cleveland State 87-79 Friday night and Chattanooga State 81-70 Saturday. Motlow has a chance to further enhance its position in the standings this weekend when it travels to Roane State (6-5, 9-14) Friday night and Walters State (11-0, 19-4) Saturday.

Lewis, who leads the conference in scoring average (21.6) and rebounding (11.7) and is the clear favorite to win player of the year honors, was virtually unstoppable in both home wins last weekend.

With Motlow leading 15-14 after one quarter Friday night, Lewis caught fire and led the Lady Bucks to a 40-32 lead at halftime and 62-49 lead after three quarters. She scored 33 points and pulled down eight rebounds with four steals and two blocked shots. Tanisia Murphy added 14 points, Katie Thomas scored 13 and Star Bell-Freeman scored 10.

After trailing early Saturday 12-8, Motlow ended the first quarter on a 10-2 runs and never trailed again. The Lady Bucks helped a large crowd celebrate homecoming by surging to a 38-27 lead at halftime and a 58-41 advantage after three quarters.

Lewis was the best player on the floor yet again, driving through the lane for multiple old-fashioned three-point plays and muscling her way over taller opponents to get rebounds. She ended the afternoon with 32 points, hitting 11-17 field goals and all nine of her free throws, and pulled in 12 rebounds. Murphy scored 20 points and Bell-Freeman added 16 as Motlow shot 53.8 percent from the field.
