Motlow State to hold Futsal Tournament in late January, now accepting boys and girls teams

Dec. 7, 2016

On track to begin its new women's soccer program in the fall, Motlow State Community College will expand its soccer scope by holding its first annual winter Futsal Tournament Jan. 28-29, 2017, inside Copperweld Arena on the Moore County campus.

The tournament will serve as one of multiple athletic department fundraisers designed to improve Motlow's ability to compete in all sports on a national level. It will feature boys teams on Saturday and girls teams on Sunday. Team ages will range between U8 and U20. Availability is limited, so teams are encouraged to contact Motlow women's soccer Head Coach Andy Lyon at 931-393-1622 or as soon as possible.

"We are expecting a big turnout," said Lyon. "Futsal has always been popular in this area and we are really looking forward to watching these players show what they can do. I'm a big fan of futsal as it can really make a big difference in a player's overall game. It is fast-paced and challenges players to increase their speed of thought, decision making, ball control and first touch."

For those not familiar with the game, unlike some other forms of indoor soccer, futsal is played on a hard court surface. It is also played with a smaller ball which has less bounce than a regular soccer ball due to the hard playing surface. The surface, ball, and rules combine to create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique, as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

"The game of futsal is gaining in popularity throughout the world, and I'm genuinely excited for Motlow to be hosting this event," added Lyon. "We are looking for teams to fill out our brackets. I've received a lot of interest so far from teams all over this area. We expect a great weekend of competitive futsal."

United States Futsal (USFF) has been governing the sport of Futsal in the United States since 1981. Futsal (Five-a-Side Soccer) is "The Way the World Plays Indoor Soccer" and is the international form of indoor soccer approved by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). It is played in all continents of the world by over 100 countries with 12 million players.

Coaches and players the world over see futsal as a fast paced, action-packed, electrifying game with many similarities to soccer that can be played indoors and outdoors. "Futsal fever" is catching on in USA, with coaches recognizing numerous technical and tactical benefits that are transferable to soccer.
